PLANO -- Plano scored touchdowns off two John Tyler turnovers and Brandon Stephens ran for three touchdowns to help the Wildcats beat the Lions, 35-17, on Friday night at John Clark Stadium.

Plano (1-0) turned a Bryson Smith interception into an 8-yard touchdown run by Matt Keys to break a 14-14 tie with 3:06 left in the second quarter. The Wildcats went into the half up 21-14.

John Tyler (0-1) never got any closer. Stephens, who ran for 106 yards on 15 carries, scored his third touchdown of the game from 4 yards out with 5:47 left in the third to give the Wildcats a 28-14 lead.

The Lions got within 11 on a 35-yard field goal by Devan Salazar, but another turnover sealed the deal in the fourth. Nic Melson recovered the ball in the end zone after the snap went over the JT punter's head with 10:10 left in the game.

Smith accounted for both of John Tyler's scores, rushing for 146 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and throwing for 121 yards -- which included a 15-yard touchdown to Texas commit Damion Miller.

Smith cut Plano's lead to 14-7 with 4:21 left in the first quarter on a 60-yard touchdown run.

Stephens scored both of Plano's first-quarter touchdowns, the first a 41-yard run and the second from 7 yards out.

Duntayviun Gross led JT receivers with five catches for 46 yards, and Miller notched two catches for 39 yards and the touchdown.

John Tyler is at home next week against longtime rival Longview at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
