FRISCO--The first touchdown was the only one worth celebrating for Aubrey.

The Chaparrals held a brief lead, but once Pleasant Grove scored, it didn't slow down. The Hawks cruised to a 56-28 victory in the area round on Friday behind their potent offense.

The Hawks gained 514 yards on only 27 plays. Six of their eight touchdowns came on gains of 20 yards or more. The longest score was a 72-yard scamper from TJ Cole in the third quarter.

They didn't hold onto the ball for long when they got it. Pleasant Grove coach Josh Gibson said it was redemption for the way the Hawks played last week.

"I think we played our worst offensive game of the season last week against Tatum," he said. "We were frustrated about that. You can't play that way in the playoffs and survive. We had a heck of a week fixing things mentally and fixing their effort. I think the kids came out here and played their butts off. It showed. This was probably one of our more focused games."

After Spencer Neumann struck first for Aubrey, Pleasant Grove scored five unanswered touchdowns. It began with an 11-yard pass from Ben Harmon to Carson Cox and ended with Bruce Garrett finding an opening for a 34-yard touchdown run.

Chauncey Martin was the Hawks' biggest offensive threat. He rushed only seven times but managed 158 yards and two touchdowns. He broke off on runs of 65, 27 and 25 yards.

Aubrey managed to work time off the clock, but couldn't seem to score until the game was already out of reach.

"I was impressive with how we kept them out of the end zone," Gibson said. "They got a couple scores late when we were trying to get kids playing time, but I give them credit."

Aubrey managed to gain more than 300 yards on the ground behind running backs Pablo Vera and Neumann. Neumann finished with 138 yards to lead the team, while Vera had 101.

Pleasant Grove quarterback Ben Harmon was a perfect 7-for-7, throwing for 155 yards and three touchdowns, including two to Cox.

The Hawks will face Celina in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday in Sulphur Springs.

Gibson said he is simply thankful to have one more week with his kids. However, after Celina knocked Pleasant Grove out in the same round last season, 23-19, he said this game will present a chance for the Hawks to get revenge.

"I'm thankful for the opportunity to go out and get a bad taste out of our mouth," he said.
