Rose City Classic: Carthage Concludes Tournament With 8-6 Win Over Sulphur Springs

TYLER — The Carthage Bulldogs used a six-run fourth inning, and held on for an 8-6 win over Sulphur Springs on Saturday in the final game of the 22nd annual Rose City Classic at Mike Carter Field.

Carthage, which went 3-1 over the three-day event, improved to 4-1 on the season with the victory that was shortened to six innings because of a two-hour time limit.

Kolby Blissett and JayDon Day each had two RBIs at the plate for the Bulldogs, which got the most out of just three hits on the night.

Blissett got the win on the mound, while Day pitched a scoreless sixth inning to record the save.

Carthage took an 8-6 lead into the sixth, but Day allowed back-to-back singles by Jordan Jackson and Cole Hill to begin the frame. But Jenner Jackson then flew out to right fielder Brody Colle, who fired a strike to third to cut down a tagging Jordan Jackson for a double play. Day then struck out Kason Matthews to end it.

The Bulldogs erupted for six runs in the top of the fourth to build a 7-2 lead. Blissett and Day each had two-RBI singles in an inning that also featured two erros, two walks, a hit batsmen, a wild pitch and passed ball.

Sulphur Springs responded with a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning. Hill and Alex Burney had RBI singles, while Jenner Jackson drove in two with a single to cut Carthage’s lead to 7-6.

Jared Twomey scored on a wild pitch in the sixth to increase Carthage’s lead to two runs.

Carthage continues its season Monday at home against defending Class 3A state champion Pleasant Grove, while Sulphur Springs is at Tyler Lee on Tuesday.
