MOUNT VERNON -- Sam Alston passed for 318 yards and three touchdowns, Kris Ables accounted for 322 yards and three touchdowns and Mount Vernon began the season with a 28-22 win over Emory Rains on Friday night.

Alston completed 10-of-16 attempts on the night. Ables carried 12 times for 113 yards and a touchdown and was on the receiving end of five Alston passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns, including an 88-yarder.

Mount Vernon (1-0) resumes its season Friday at Linden-Kildare.
