TYLER -- The eighth-ranked San Augustine Wolves began Saturday morning's Class A Division I Region III championship fast, and finished strong to punch the program's first-ever trip to the boys basketball state tournament.

Bobby Tanner scored 27 points to lead San Augustine to a 92-77 win over No. 3 Grapeland at Tyler Junior College's Wagstaff Gym.

Four other players reached double figures in scoring for San Augustine (23-6). JaCourtney Thomas had 18 points, while Jarvis Smith finished with 16. Dezmond Randle and JaMikel Roberts had 10 points apiece.

San Augustine will play at either 8:30 or 10 a.m. Thursday at the University of Texas' Frank Erwin Special Events Center in one Class A Division I state semifinal against an undetermined opponent.

The Wolves led 22-16 after one quarter, and extended their lead to 41-31 at halftime. Grapeland made a push and cut the lead to six, 73-67, in the fourth quarter. But Thomas nailed a big 3-pointer and San Augustine never looked back.
