MESQUITE -- Carthage pushed Argyle to the brink in Saturday's Class 4A Region II championship game, but the defending state champions pulled through for a 25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 25-15, 15-10 win at Mesquite Poteet High School.

Argyle punched its ticket to this upcoming week's UIL state tournament in Garland while the Ladydawgs' dream season ended three wins shy of a state championship with a final record of 36-7.

Carson Robertson, a UT-Tyler softball commitment, put up 44 assists in her final competitive volleyball match.

Faith Landreneaux paced the Ladydawgs with 19 points on kills. She will return to the program as a senior next year.

Cindrasha Boykin scored 12 points on kills and Alli Capps played a big role on both offense and defense with nine kills and 23 digs.

 

Callisburg Downs Beckville

MIDLOTHIAN -- Beckville emerged early as East Texas' greatest hope for a state volleyball championship and ended the season as the second-to-last local team standing.

Callisburg recovered from losing the upper hand in the fourth set of the Class 3A Region II championship game to knock out the Ladycats in five sets, 14-25, 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8, in Midlothian. The game ended about an hour after Carthage bowed out in the Class 4A state playoffs.

Leverett's Chapel reached the state tournament at the Class 1A level.

Beckville finished its season three wins shy of a state championship and with a final record of 36-6. Callisburg advanced to next week's Class 3A state tournament in Garland.

Four Ladycats reached double digits in scoring despite the loss.

Riley Seegers led the team with 18 points on 15 kills and three blocks. Kinley Blair followed close by way of 12 kills and four blocks.

Payton Jones scored 15 points and Hannah Humphries rounded out the first tier of Beckville scorers with 12 kills.

Kinley Pepper recorded 57 assists through the five-set match.

Seegers, Jones, Humphries and Pepper are expected to return to the Beckville varsity roster next season. Blair will graduate in May.
