Kelly Mercer has been named the new athletic director and head football coach at Spring Hill, the school district announced Monday.

Mercer, who has spent more than 20 years in the coaching profession, was most recently the offensive coordinator at Class 6A Plano West. He replaces Mark Sartain, who resigned after two seasons on the job.

Under Mercer's leadership, the Plano West offense averaged more than 45 points and 430 yards per game in 2014, which ended with a 9-3 record and trip to the area round of the playoffs.

A graduate of Troy High School, Mercer received his Bachelor's Degree from Texas A&M and Master's Degree from Texas A&M-Commerce. He has spent the last 17 seasons as an assistant in Plano.

Mercer will be Spring Hill's fourth different head coach in five seasons. The Panthers, who finished last year 2-8 overall and 1-4 in District 6-4A Division II, have not made the playoffs since 2007 or won in the postseason since 2004.

Spring Hill's district mates include Atlanta, Center, Gladewater, Pleasant Grove, and Tatum.
