JEFFERSON -- The Tatum Eagles defeated the Jefferson Bulldogs, 31-14, in a District 9-2A Division I heavyweight match Friday night, keeping the Eagles tied atop the league standings.

The Eagles (7-2, 3-1) scored twice in just over two minutes in the first quarter to take the lead and they never looked back.

On the opening possession, Tatum quarterback Darian Brooks connected with tight end Devon Boyd on a 16-yard pass that capped a seven-play, 65-yard drive.

After the Bulldogs (7-2, 2-2) went three-and-out, the Eagles scored on one play as Demetrius Hill found a seam and dashed 87 yards for the touchdown.

Jefferson scored in the first quarterback following an interception in Tatum territory when quarterback Brayden Varnell scored from a yard out to cap a 36-yard drive.

The 14-7 score held until the fourth period.

Tatum scored on the second play of the fourth quarter when Brooks passed to Andrew Stoker for a 77-yard touchdown.

After a Tatum drive stalled, Alexis Garza kicked a 36 yard field goal at the 7:09 mark in the fourth to boost the Tatum lead to 24-7. But Jefferson answered moments later as Varnell took it in again from the 1-yard line, set up by a 65-yard pass to David Police that took it to the 1.

Tatum’s Javolick Garret would add another score at the 3:08 mark of the fourth on a pick-six from 89 yards out. It was one of two interceptions on the night for Garrett.

The Bulldogs complete the regular season hosting the White Oak Roughnecks while Tatum travels to Harmony.
