BIG SANDY -- Ore City went 1-2 in the first day of the Big Sandy Tournament, but the team did get a needed win against Union Grove to highlight its day.

Union Grove had the Lady Rebels' number last season. The Lady Lions handed Ore City two losses in tournament play and two more in district matches and won 10 of 11 sets in 2013.

Tables turned with a 27-29, 25-20, 25-22 Lady Rebels win.

Nataya Johnson led the way for Ore City with 24 assists, two aces and nine digs. Tiera Cook led the Lady Rebels in scoring with eight kills through the three tightly contested sets.

Ore City played very well on defense with a combined 56 digs. Chelsea Young topped the charts with 20 digs on her own.

The Lady Rebels also squared off with Beckville, a 9-25, 11-25 loss, and Tyler Grace, a 14-25, 14-25 defeat, Thursday.

The Beckville Lady Bearcats were led by Kassidy Alexander's 17 assists in that match. Carley Lawhorn led Beckville in scoring with seven kills.

Ore City's Cook had two kills in the match and the team flashed its defensive capabilities once again with 37 digs.

Cook wrapped up a solid day with three kills against Grace.

 

Beckville Splits Grace + Union Grove

BIG SANDY -- Beckville put up a good showing in its win against Ore City and then topped Union Grove before it was all said and done.

The Lady Bearcats defeated Union Grove, 25-22, 25-14, and fell to Tyler Grace, 24-26, 21-25.

Carson Blair guided Beckville to the Union Grove win with seven kills and five digs. Kimber Wesner recorded a team-best six digs. Natalie Moore had four of the Lady Bearcats' eight aces in the match.

Balir put up nine kills against Grace. Wesner saved 10 points on digs.
