COLLEGE STATION -- The Tyler Grace Community Cougars made quite a splash this summer during the 7-on-7 season.

First it was a run to the TAPPS state tournament semifinals, followed by a memorable performance Friday at the Texas State 7-on-7 Championships.

Grace, which dropped its first two pool play games Thursday, won its next six games -- the final five on Friday to capture the consolation championship at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.

The Cougars punctuated the afternoon with a 53-27 win over Bay City in the finals.

Grace, which built a 34-7 lead in the early stages of the second half, scored on nine of its 10 offensive possessions, with seven different Cougars receivers catching touchdowns.

Led by senior quarterback Christopher Wilhelmi and the receiving corps of Parker Ary, Brady Newman, Garrett Tauscher and Zach West, the Cougars averaged 45 points in the five games Friday.

The Grace defense was solid as well both days as Greyson Kuykendall and Adam McKinney combined for nine interceptions.

Grace defeated Christoval (41-36) and Godley (34-13) during the morning, then took a 49-26 win over Ferris in the quarterfinals before its 48-41 overtime defeat of Geronimo Navarro in the consolation semifinals.
