Tyler Lee’s Makyle Sanders Gets Scholarship Offer From Naval Academy

Makyle Sanders' second FBS scholarship opportunity rolled in Wednesday evening.

The Tyler Lee safety announced through his personal Twitter account that the United States Naval Academy invited him to join their team upon high school graduation next year. Navy joined Memphis, its American Athletic Conference rival, in the competition for the junior.

Sanders (6-1, 177) racked up 105 tackles with two interceptions and 12 passes broken up for Lee last season. The team finished 5-5 in 2015 and tied for third place in District 11-6A, but it missed out on the postseason due to tiebreakers.

Lee will remain in 11-6A this fall and welcomes a few new district mates in longtime rivals John Tyler and Longview. Mesquite, Mesquite Horn, North Mesquite, Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath make up the rest of the league.

Navy turned in a very solid 11-2 record last year and narrowly missed the American Athletic Conference championship game after tying with Houston for first place within the league's West Division. Houston earned the title game right by beating Navy head-to-head in the final week of the regular season -- Navy's sole loss of conference play.

The Midshipmen program, which had fallen to Notre Dame earlier in the season, went on to edge Army in its annual rivalry game and then took down Pittsburgh in the Military Bowl to finish the year ranked 18th in the Associated Press poll.

Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo briefly considered taking Brigham Young's vacant position between the Army game and the bowl game, but he will return to Annapolis, Md., for a ninth season. Niumatalolo's overall record with the Midshipmen is 68-37.

Arp running back Kayce Medlock and Tyler Bishop Gorman receiver Judah Bell are other local players with offers from Niumatalolo's coaching staff.

Liberty-Eylau safety Andre Wiley Jr., a senior, signed with the Midshipman program earlier this year.

Navy graduates are generally absorbed by the United States Navy or other armed forces branches after completing their time at the academy.

Sanders, like all high school football prospects currently in their junior year, will become eligible to sign with any program that offers him in February.
