UTSA Offers Longview’s Travin Howard

Travin Howard has had one of the best defensive campaigns of the 2013 East Texas football season. Thursday evening, he collected his first Division I FBS offer.

The 6-foot, 178-pound Howard has been one of the region's most dynamic defensive playmakers this fall. He finished the regular season with 65 tackles, seven for loss, one sack, five interceptions, three forced fumbles, seven pass breakups, one punt block, and one defensive touchdown.

Howard has also returned three punts for touchdowns for the Lobos, who are 9-1 entering Saturday's 4 p.m. Class 5A Division II Region II bi-district playoff against Rowlett at Dallas' Kincaide Stadium.

Howard assembled one of the best performances at the ETSN.fm Football Recruiting Combine at APEC training facility in Tyler in May. He tied Kilgore senior Aaron Foy for the event's best broad jump (10-4 1/2) of the 100 participants. He also clocked a 4.54-second laser-timed 40-yard dash, leaped 36 inches in the vertical, and registered 14 bench press reps of 185 pounds. Those 14 put him fourth among the combine's 63 defensive backs, receivers, running backs, and quarterbacks, who all tested the bench at 185 pounds.

UTSA has offered another Longview senior safety: Stephan Maxey, who has 75 tackles, 2 INTs, one fumble recovery, one punt block, and one defensive touchdown. The Roadrunners have a commitment from Carthage quarterback Blake Bogenschutz and have also offered his leading receiver, Terian "Tee" Goree, who holds nine FBS offers.
