The amazing winning streak at Waskom teetered and nearly fell Friday.

Fortunately, the young Wildcats had Keylon Johnson to help keep them afloat for a 26-24 double overtime victory against Jefferson.

Johnson recorded 15 tackles in the extremely close game, including two tackles for loss, as well as two quarterback pressures for incomplete passes from his defensive end spot. He also saved the game in double overtime offensively by recovering a ball that a runner fumbled at the goal line in the end zone for a touchdown.

For his efforts in helping Waskom reach a 32nd consecutive win, Johnson is the ETSN.fm + Dairy Queen Defensive Player of the Week.

Waskom has now won the past three Defensive Player of the Week awards issued. Former linebacker Mike Reason won the award in Week 16 of last season and then again the next week by winning Defensive Most Valuable Player in the 2015 Class 3A Division II state championship game.

The Wildcats closed Friday's game at Jefferson on defense after Johnson scored the go-ahead touchdown and Jason Jinks ran in a two-point conversion.

Jefferson got the touchdown it needed in its followup drive from the Waskom 25-yard line, but the defense held on the Bulldogs' two-point conversion try and the game ended.

Johnson and company have a huge game Saturday on the big stage at Longview's Lobo Stadium. They will face a Harmony team with much more overall varsity playing experience.

Can Waskom rise to the occasion and take a 33rd consecutive win?

Another strong defensive performance from Johnson certainly won't hurt.
