Week 1 5A/4A Poll: John Tyler Claims the No. 1 Spot

John Tyler's 35-21 win against Lufkin and Longview's 41-8 loss to Coppell at SMU have catapulted Cujo to the No. 1 spot in ETSN's 5A/4A weekly poll.

John Tyler (1-0) will protect its newly minted top ranking at Lancaster on Friday.

Longview (0-1) fell from first to third following its surprising 33-point loss to Coppell, and by default that gave Lufkin (0-1) a bump to No. 2. Sulphur Springs' overtime goal-line stand against Tyler Lee (0-1) that preserved a 35-34 victory kept the Wildcats (1-0) at No. 4. That loss dropped Tyler Lee a spot to sixth, while Jacksonville (1-0) jumped two spots to fifth following its 34-30 road upset of Carthage.

Whitehouse's 14-point fourth quarter helped the Wildcats (1-0) beat Hallsville 35-18, a win that moved Whitehouse up a spot to No. 7. Like John Tyler and Jacksonville, Lindale (1-0) climbed two spots from 10th to eighth after its surprising 31-14 win against Chapel Hill.

Texas High (1-0) was this week's hard-luck case. The Tigers beat interstate rival Arkansas High 13-7, but slid from sixth to ninth.

Another District 14-4A team, Mount Pleasant (1-0), replaced league mate Hallsville in the top 10. Hallsville's road loss to Whitehouse and Mount Pleasant's 57-27 rout of Paris led to the Tigers' breaking into the poll at No. 10.
