Zach Flanagan + Tyler Lee Too Much For Kilgore On Day One of Rose City Classic
TYLER — Zach Flanagan tossed a three-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts to spark Tyler Lee past Kilgore, 10-0 in five innings, in Thursday’s final game of the Rose City Classic at Mike Carter Field.
Flanagan, a senior right-hander who has signed with JUCO power Howard College, was in control from the very beginning. His first six and eight of his first nine outs all came via the strikeout.
And his two-run double in the fifth inning put the 10-run mercy rule into effect.
Ben Romines had two hits, an RBI and scored twice, while Chandler Hill was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Lee (2-0). Trace Reed singled, walked twice, scored three runs and stole two bases, and Ross Himes drove in a run and scored twice.
Tyler Lee jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings with only two hits.
Himes delivered an RBI groundout, Flanagan scored on a passed ball and Romines crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the Red Raiders’ three-run first.
Romines had a run-scoring single, while Reed and Flanagan scored on wild pitches and Romines came home on an error in the four-run second.
HIll’s single made it 8-0 in the fourth, and Flanagan ended it with his two-run double an inning later.
Kilgore (0-3) pitchers issued seven walks and seven wild pitches on the night, while the defense committed four errors.
Tyler Lee takes on Forney at 4:45 p.m. Friday, while Kilgore faces Lufkin Hudson at 7 p.m. on the second day of the Rose City Classic.
