De Leon Eliminates Cayuga from Class A Division I Region II Playoffs, 36-7

JOSHUA -- If you run and stop the run, you usually have a good chance to win. De Leon rode that formula to a 36-7 Class A Division I Region II victory over Cayuga on Thursday at Owl Stadium.

The Bearcats racked up almost 400 total yards -- all on the ground -- while holding Cayuga to 98 total yards. De Leon (8-3) faces Lindsay (5-5) next week in a 1A D-I Region II area playoff. Cayuga's season ends at 8-2.

Danny Cervantes led De Leon with 166 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries, while Austin Sadberry ran 12 times for 96 yards and one touchdown. Robert Smith had 13 carries for 86 yards and a score. Josh Brownlee added 46 yards and one touchdown on five carries as the Bearcats did not attempt a pass.

Keshawn Jackson led Cayuga with 22 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown. John Venable had five carries for 16 yards. De Leon held Cayuga to five first downs and only 13 passing yards.

A costly mishap put Cayuga behind the 8-ball early when Jackson had a 70-yard touchdown run negated by a penalty.

Cayuga can look forward to the 2014 season coming off an eight-win campaign and welcoming back Jackson, who was only a junior in 2013. He finished the season with more than 1,860 yards and 27 touchdowns.
