No one knew what to expect from the Troup Tigers in 2012. Just a few days before the start of two-a-days, Troup hired East Texas coaching legend Dennis Alexander as its next head coach.

Alexander was charged with returning Troup to among the top programs in the area. From 1998-2006, the Tigers were among the top 2A teams in East Texas, compiling a 52-27 record. But in the five years prior to Alexander's arrival last summer, Troup went just 16-36.

If 2012 is any indication, Alexander has Troup moving in the right direction. The Tigers finished 9-2 last year, claiming a share of the District 9-2A Division I title.

Even more good news: most of Troup's impact players from a season ago are back, including talented junior quarterback Blake Lynch, who wowed fans with a stellar sophomore year. Add to that a tough 1-2 combination in the backfield of Marcus Kincade and Bullard Brook Hill transfer D'Luis West, and Troup could give opposing defenses fits in 2013.

Troup will have work to do on its defense, which has only three starters back from 2012. The Tigers' defense was among the best in the area last season, allowing just 16.3 points per game.
