We’ve had some frightening storms in Texas here lately. Of course, there’s nothing unusual about scary severe weather this time of year, but the storms that have rolled through this year have been especially jarring. 

While you won’t find me out chasing tornadoes, I like to go outside and watch the weather as long as it’s not too crazy out there. And I find lightning to be particularly fascinating. 

Growing up in Texas, I never realized just how much crazier the weather is here than it is in other parts of the country. We had a consultant visiting from New York working with us at the radio station a few years ago when a late-night severe thunderstorm popped up in Wichita Falls. He told me he had never seen or heard thunder and lightning like that before.

The below video is a pretty damn impressive display of lightning here in the Lone Star State. Watch as lightning reaches down from that supercell and touches the ground several times. If you’ve ever been near a lightning strike, you know just how blinding and deafening it can be. I would much rather watch from a nice, safe distance like the internet.
