(Mix 93-1) It doesn't matter when you grew up; every generation has slang terms. Teens often use slang as a way to communicate and vary the language, but for adults, they can be confusing because we're unsure what these terms mean and how they're intended to be used.

For the longest time, I was out of touch with this lingo and had not used slang in several years. When my daughter reached her teenage years, my wife and I were reintroduced to slang, learned some new terms, and even began using a few ourselves to make us appear a bit more relevant, but we were simply laughed at by her and her friends!

Every Generation Has Its Slang

As a child of the 80s, our slang terms were made popular by movies and television. Words like: tubular, grody, gnarly, and bitchin' or phrases like: gag me with a spoon, take a chill pill, totally tubular, or grody to the max. Fun words and phrases that meant a wide variety of things.

From the 80s to Now: How Slang Has Evolved

When the ’90s came along, we used phrases like... as if, my bae, da bomb and chillax, fly, fresh, and bling. I was pretty much over slang after that until my daughter introduced us to words like: fleek, YOLO, cancelled, bae, catfish, and flex.  Today, slang terms are created through social media and made popular by videos and memes.

The Viral ‘67’ Slang Trend Explained

Now, a new slang has arrived, thanks to social media, that is driving teachers insane and disrupting classrooms across Texas and the U.S. Parents of preteens and teens are well aware of the ‘6-7’ trend. A trend that has taken over social media and has become a thing now.

Merriam-Webster says, "Six seven (or 67 or 6 7, etc.) is "a nonsensical expression used especially by teens and tweens that is connected to a rap song and also to a 6’ 7” tall basketball player".

Why Teachers Are Banning ‘67’ in Classrooms

When pre-teens and teens hear six followed by seven, they shout out 'six seven'. It can happen anywhere and anytime; while taking roll in the classroom, using numbers in math, asking the time, or someone in the class shouts out 6 and others respond with 7. This shouting out of six-seven is disrupting learning time in the classroom.

Many teachers have come up with some creative ways to embrace the 67 craze and, at the same time, curb its use with some unique consequences.
