Let's face it, raising kids is expensive, especially in Texas. It does take two people to make a baby, and it should take two people to raise a baby. However, things happen in life where parents don't stay together, divorce, or just can't take care of the kids, and family members take over. When that happens, someone is usually required to pay child support.

When it comes to dealing with child support, it can be a nightmare. While you have some parents who step up and pay child support, you have others who avoid it at all costs and believe they shouldn't have to support the other parent or caregiver.

In Texas and likely other states, it is difficult to navigate the child support system.  Either payments aren't coming in, or the amount should be more.

The Office of the Texas Attorney General has put a new plan in place to help with Texas child support and navigating the system.

Texas Attorney Ken Paxton launched Children Are My Priority, or ChAMP.  This new case management and customer service system brings modernization to the child support division.

How Does the New ChAMP Platform Work?

The new system officially launched on June 12, 2025. The OAG says that this platform improves efficiency, streamlines case processing, and enhances the customer experience.

How Much Money Has ChAMP Processed So Far?

Since June 12, the ChAMP system has processed over $614 million in payments.  The OAG says this amount is more than what 35 other states disburse in a year.

A key financial process that once took up to five business days to complete due to overnight batch processing can now happen in near real time, accelerating support to families across the state.

Users can enter the self-service portal online or via their phone.

Why Did ChAMP Delay Some Payments?

While this seems to be a positive for the system, with the switch over, it has delayed payments to those parents who depend on the support.  According to a user on Reddit,

I have not received a payment in over a month. I know they are updating the system so payments are on hold for a lot of people. I have no idea how long this is going to go on for. Does anyone have a time line on when payments will be released?

Many followed up, experiencing the same issues, with payments being over a month behind.

Will ChAMP Help Enforce Missed Payments?

Now that the program has been in place for almost two months, payments are being received on time.  Hopefully, in time, they will find a better and quicker way to start enforcing payment on those in arrears.
