Every Texan knows that the bluebonnet is the state flower. One that is less known but still common knowledge is our state bird, the northern mockingbird. But did you know that Texas has a State dog?

Now that the shock of having a state dog has set in, wait until I tell you what type of dog it is. The official Texas dog is The Blue Lacy, don't worry I was today years old when I found out about this breed too.

THE HISTORY

Let's go back to how the breed came to be. The Blue Lacy is the only breed to come out of Texas. The Lacy brothers created it in the mid-19th century. It is said the four brothers used the greyhound, scenthound, and coyote to create the breed. Governor Rick Perry named The Blue Lacy the dog of Texas on June 18, 2005.

ABOUT THE BREED

Blue Lacys' are amazing hunters and are used the most by trappers in the United States. They are known to be very loyal dogs with a lot of love to give. The blue lacy is a smart breed and a quick learner. This breed has high energy levels, which is why they use them in obedience and agility trials.

As I was doing the research I fell in love with this dog. The Blue Lacy deserves to be a Texan. If you think about it, you could use the description of this breed to describe a Texan, smart, loyal, and good at hunting.
