Growing up I believed many superstitions to be true. I was raised in the small town of Fabens, Texas. This town is almost as far west as you can go in Texas and is a predominantly Latino Community.

If you know anything about Latinos we have many superstitions. I used to be terrified of owls because I believed they were witches. The one I experienced more often was getting used to people asking to touch my hair because they didn't want to give it "ojo".  If they didn't something bad would happen like my hair falling out.

When I moved to Odessa around eight years old, I discovered most of these tales weren't true. Even though some superstitions were debunked as I got older I realized many people in the Permian Basin believed or had heard of the superstitions from back home 4 hours away.

I have now lived in the Permian Basin for almost 26 years. In those many years, I have traveled around the States and even back home. One thing I have come to realize is most Texans believe or have heard of the same superstitions. One that I picked up early in Odessa is if you find a penny pick it up and put it in your shoe. My mom always had a field day with this one because when I would find a penny in the house I would find the nearest shoe to throw it in. I wanted my mom to have good luck so her shoes got most of the pennies but she didn't like sticking her foot in her shoe to feel an unidentified object. Side note, she had an irrational fear of a spider hiding in her shoe.

I love having conversations with my friends about the weirdest superstitions we have heard. Even though sometimes we share some unheard ones, most of the time the group isn't surprised. Maybe this should be the next "hot top" in your friend group.

To help you out, here is a list of some of the superstitions most Texans can relate to.
