VAN — From the opening kickoff, the Van Vandals made their presence known, dominating the Brownsboro Bears, 70-30, Friday night at Van Memorial Stadium.

Matt Savis led the charge for Van (7-1, 3-0 in District 15-3A), racking up 161 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.

Garrett Smallwood passed for106 yards and added a 2-yard rushing touchdown, while Syd Moore rushed for two touchdowns in the Vandals victory.

Brownsboro's Shelby Rogers threw for 218 yards and four touchdowns in the loss for the Bears (5-3, 2-1).

With 4:45 left in the first quarter, Rogers’ pass intended for Tyler Thomison was intercepted at the Vandals’ 45-yard line by Aphonso Thomas, who ran it all the way into the endzone for a Van touchdown, giving the Vandals a 22-0 advantage over the Bears.

On the very next play, the Bears fumbled the kickoff, which led to a 2-yard touchdown run by Smallwood.

With 10:20 left in the first half, Rogers put the Bears on the board with a 1-yard quarterback sneak. However, the Vandals quickly responded when Hunter Hopkins returned the kickoff 75 yards for another Van touchdown.

On the opening drive of the second half Savis fought through the Brownsboro defensive line to punch the ball in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown, extending the Vandals' lead to 56-12.

Rogers then began to connect, hitting four different receivers, including Davonte Givens for a 10-yard touchdown.

With 11:54 left in the game, Rogers, once again, found Givens for the 40-yard touchdown, but the Bears were unable to connect on the two-point conversion. Van’s Patrick Ward then rushed for 21 yards and a touchdown, breaking five tackles in the process.

With the fourth quarter winding down, Rogers found Chris Davis from 26 yards out for the final touchdown of the game.
