WASKOM -- The ninth-ranked Waskom Wildcats survived their first test in District 8-3A Division II with a 34-24 win over previously unbeaten Arp on Friday night.

The win improved Waskom to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in league play, while Arp fell to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in district.

Kevin Johnson led the way for Waskom with 154 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Quarterback Trace Carter ran for 45 yards and two touchdowns, Dillon Benton carried nine times for 60 yards, June Bug Johnson added 46 yards on nine carries, while Chan Amie chipped in with 22 rushing yards.

Waskom trailed 12-0 at the end of the first quarter, but scored twice in the second period to enter halftime with a 14-12 lead.

The Wildcats scored on their second possession of the second half, and after recovering an onside kick, scored again to begin to pull away.

Waskom returns to action next Friday night at Winona, while Arp plays host to Troup the same night.
