UIL six-man football got a name change in February. East Texas has quite a bit to offer the new "Class A," despite having just five programs participating in the state's smallest public school classification.

LONGVIEW -- Kilgore was one out away from clinching a District 16-3A opening win against Spring Hill. Nathan Methvin turned the game for the Panthers, a contest his team eventually won 3-2 in eight innings. Methvin hit a two-out RBI double to the right field wall in the bottom of the seventh before being stranded on the bags to force extra innings...

The non-district fortunes have varied during the first several weeks of the season, but Maud, Detroit, and Overton appear to once again be the teams that should battle at the top of District 10-A Division II.

GARY -- The Troup Lady Tigers went a perfect 3-0 in pool play Thursday at the Gary volleyball tournament, defeating Kilgore, Waskom and Overton.

Maud, Overton, and Detroit each went 3-1 during the 2012 District 10-A Division II race. Those three teams should again battle for the league championship.

East Texas girls athletes qualified in more than 50 individual events and 11 relays in this weekend's UIL state track and field championships.

Eight individual competitors and three relay teams qualified for state at the Region III and Region IV track and field championships in Class A Division II this past weekend.

PRICE -- The top-ranked Carlisle Indians continued their domination of District 20-A, tossing their fourth consecutive no-hitter in a 13-0 win over Union Hill on Friday.

Saltillo had three of the four superlative honors with the release of the 24-A Division II all-district boys basketball team, as voted by the league's coaches.

The new District 10-A Division II is home to four first-year coaches: Maud, Cumby, Overton, and Union Hill. The one team with the same coach it had in 2011 -- Detroit -- looks like the district's preseason favorite. But 10-A D-II could be one of the more wide-open districts in 2012...
