Tom Herman and his skeleton crew of assistant coaches at Texas made a splash in the DeMarvion Overshown sweepstakes Thursday.

Arp's junior safety is the latest regional prospect with a Longhorns football scholarship opportunity and the second prospect in three days to receive an offer specifically from Herman's staff. He joins senior John Tyler quarterback Bryson Smith, who is being recruited to play receiver, on the program's revised short list.

Overshown (6-4, 196) reported the news directly to ETSN.fm. He also holds an invitation to join the program at UTSA.

Texas will have to take a backseat in the short term to Arp's playoff run. Overshown and company will play for a berth into the Class 3A Division II state championship game Friday against Boling at Texan Drive Stadium in New Caney.

Overshown has been a big part of Arp's 12-2 season thus far, which hit its current high last week by eliminating an unbeaten Newton team that began the postseason as a big favorite to win the classification's championship. He has 153 tackles, three interceptions and a fumble recovery in addition to 121 receiving yards and a touchdown on just four catches.

The Longhorns are in full transition mode after a 5-7 season and no bowl game on the horizon. It fired former head coach Charlie Strong after three seasons and one bowl game appearance ahead of persuading Herman to give up a 9-3 Houston team getting ready to play in the Las Vegas Bowl against San Diego State.

Unfortunately, that spelled a definitive end to former Gilmer head coach Jeff Traylor's time as an assistant coach in Austin. He's on the market for his second-ever college football job, although Herman's decision not to retain him or any of the other assistant coaches under Strong has allowed him to become fully invested in Gilmer's own run to the state semifinals at the Class 4A Division II level.

Herman's new program isn't far removed from being one of the nation's top college football programs. It played for the 2009 national championship against Alabama, a loss, and won the title in 2005.

Texas has 32 conference titles under its belt and an additional three national championships won between the 1963 and 1970. It also has been home to 56 consensus All-Americans and two Heisman Trophy winners, including former John Tyler star running back Earl Campbell.

Overshown and Smith are far from the only East Texans the new staff seem keen on taking in the near future.

Under Strong, and in large part because of Traylor, Texas received commitments from Liberty-Eylau defensive end Lagaryonn Carson, Hooks athlete Montrell Estell, John Tyler receiver Damion Miller and Nacogdoches safety Josh Thompson. None of those seniors have made any college moves since Strong was fired.

Overshown, like all college football prospects in their junior year of high school, will become eligible to sign with any program that offers him in February of 2018.
