Lindale pitcher Nick Norton fires in a pitch.

LINDALE -- You've got to do it yourself if you want it done right.

LONGVIEW -- Coaches at Gilmer love to talk about the "Buckeye Way," rising to the occasion when the competition gets stiff.

There was no shortage of East Texas talent at Thursday's District 15-4A and District 16-4A area meet at Spring Hill's Panther Stadium, but the Lady Buckeyes still managed to qualify 13 individuals for next week's Region II meet at Texas A&M-Commerce. They also advanced all three relay teams in a 43-point win against Henderson and Tatum squads that tied for second place.

Bryce Cundieff’s No-Hit Bid Helps Whitehouse Past Corsicana In Standings Race

Whitehouse starting pitcher Bryce Cundieff fires off a pitch.
Bryce Cundieff pitched 6 and 1/3 innings before allowing a hit in Tuesday's 5-3 Whitehouse win over Corsicana.

WHITEHOUSE -- It still would be easy for Whitehouse to lay an egg down the stretch and escape the backlash.

Most teams that return a roster full of players with state tournament experience are shouldered with their communities' expectations for a return trip. The Wildcats, on the other hand, have a nuclear trump card in their pocket should they stumble before reaching Round Rock for a second consecutive season.

Senior ace Ryan Walls was supposed to lead the 2017 squad back to the state's final four. He isn't available due to a preseason injury and probably won't throw in a game until next season as a Tyler Junior College Apache.

But this Whitehouse club just won't take the bait.
