ROCKWALL -- Brad Floyd usually takes off a few days of work to catch the girls basketball state tournament games in Central Texas. This year, he'll do the deal in all-expenses-paid style.

Floyd's Mount Vernon team cruised to an easy 50-35 win Saturday against Winnsboro in the Class 3A Region II championship game and spent the rest of the day sorting out the logistics to make a trip to San Antonio possible.

DALLAS -- John Tyler was not able to get a shot off from beyond mid-court and its season ended Friday at Ellis Davis Field House in the Class 6A Region II semifinal round, 66-63, to Spring Dekaney.

Still, it wasn't a bad two weeks for a program that scraped into the postseason with a last-second score in the District 11-6A playoff game for the fourth and final seed out of the league.

Gerry Stanford will be the next Texas High head football coach and director of athletics if the Texarkana Independent School District board approves him at a meeting Monday, according to Matt Stepp of Dave Campbell's Texas Football.

Stanford, currently the head coach at Class 6A program Flower Mound Marcus, served as White Oak's leader between 2011 and 2013. He posted 27-10 record during his first stint in East Texas and guided the Roughnecks to the Class 2A Division I state semifinals his final season.

WINONA -- Tatum certainly didn't look like a fourth-place district finisher in its 75-45 beatdown of Gilmer in the bi-district round of the Class 4A state playoffs.

The Eagles took permanent control of the Tuesday meeting at Winona High School less than three minutes into the contest and held a lead that ranged between six and 30 points through the game's final 28 minutes.

KAUFMAN -- John Tyler huffed, puffed and eventually did blow the house down in the area round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

Garland Lakeview Centennial led at the end of the first, second and third quarters, but an electric start in the fourth period pushed the fourth-seeded Lady Lions to a 63-56 victory Friday at Kaufman High School.

KAUFMAN -- Tyler Lee's breakthrough season under first-year coach Ross Barber came to its end Thursday in a 52-36 loss against Dallas Skyline at Kaufman High School.

Although the Class 6A area round defeat was disappointing, there weren't a lot of tears in the game's aftermath. The Lady Raiders will return 12 of 15 players next season from the team that earned the school its first girls basketball playoff win since 2005 earlier in the week.
