State 7-on-7 Tournament Pools Released + East Texas Sending 11 Teams to College Station

The Texas State 7-on-7 Association has published its Division I and Division II tournament pools for the statewide event next week at College Station’s Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.

Trey Lindsay can testify recruiting usually takes off with just one school willing to break the ice.

Northwestern State extended the senior Beckville quarterback a college football scholarship opportunity Thursday morning and did so about 15 hours after Houston Baptist became the first school in the mix. Both schools play in the Southland Conference within the FCS subset of NCAA Division I schools.

Jacksonville seemed to turn a corner last season and, with that, colleges are beginning to explore the school's talent base.

Senior tight end, H-back and linebacker Josh McDowell became the Indians' first NCAA Division I prospect in several years Tuesday thanks to a scholarship opportunity extended by FCS competitor Houston Baptist University. He reported to ETSN.fm that the Huskies program wants him to serve as a tight end or H-back at the next level.

Tevailance Hunt has been committed to Kansas since April, but new offers continue to trickle through.

Colorado State offered the senior Texas High receiver Tuesday and became the 15th NCAA Division I FBS program to enter the mix. The scholarship opportunity is Hunt's first from the Mountain West Conference.

It's looking like an above average year in sheer amount of NCAA Division I FBS caliber offensive lineman within East Texas, and the players are committing to above average schools.

Van tackle Kris Dike verbally committed to TCU late Saturday evening and became the second of seven local lineman to make a college decision. Marshall's Chasen Hines pledged to LSU in March.

TYLER -- A lot of people along Interstate 20 are eager to see how new Mavericks head coach Claude Mathis will shake up the Marshall-Longview rivalry when the two teams meet Sept. 8.

While that's the first official melee between the two schools in Mathis' tenure, the 7-on-7 squads met Saturday at Lindsey Park in Tyler for the right to advance to the Division I State 7-on-7 Tournament later this month. Longview kept its longtime edge with a 33-0 semifinal win in the Tyler State Qualifying Tournament and will make its first state tournament appearance since 2013.

Carthage's senior, the leading receiver on the 2016 Class 4A Division II state championship team, added an offer from the Bears on Friday. It's his third NCAA Division I FCS scholarship opportunity, and it follows bids from Abilene Christian and Texas Southern.
