As expected, Class 6A will gain three more teams from East Texas, as John Tyler, Longview, and Lufkin are headed up from 5A.
Tyler Lee may not be the only East Texas member of Class 6A when the University Interscholastic League's biennial realignment and reclassification process takes place in February.
John Tyler and Longview, which are currently classified as 5A schools, each turned in enrollment figures well above the 6A/5A cutoff from two years ago on Friday for UIL's "Snapshot Day."
GEORGETOWN -- The University Interscholastic League staff tried frantically to maintain some semblance of order on the Lufkin sideline.
It was a lost cause. The Panthers had just accomplished something no East Texas school had done before: a state soccer championship.
Omar Zamarripa scored two goals and set up another in Lufkin's 3-1 win over previously unbeaten Georgetown East View in the Class 5A state title game Saturday afternoon at Birkelbach Field.
GEORGETOWN -- Lufkin entered its Class 5A state semifinal having scored 64 goals on the season, none of them belonging to senior defender Chris Marquez.
That all changed Thursday night.
Marquez scored with six seconds remaining in the opening half, and the Lufkin defense made stop after stop in a 1-0 shutout of Tomball Memorial at Birkelbach Field.
GEORGETOWN -- The Center Roughriders advanced to the first UIL state soccer tournament in program history this season, and did so having to overcome a few close calls along the way.
They finally met their match Wednesday night, as Liberty Hill scored two overtime goals to defeat Center, 2-1, in their Class 4A semifinal at Birkelbach Field.
GEORGETOWN -- The Kilgore Bulldogs were already facing an uphill battle, down two goals at halftime in their Class 4A state semifinal.
And San Elizario's Edwin Marquez provided his own personal roadblock to the top of the mountain with three second-half goals in the Eagles' 5-1 rout of Kilgore, Wednesday evening at Birkelbach Field.
GEORGETOWN -- Jasper coach Gabriela Carter tried her best to console sophomore goalkeeper Yvette Carter following the Lady Bulldogs' first loss of the season.
It wasn't just another loss.
Princeton scored twice in the final six minutes of regulation to knock off top-ranked and previously unbeaten Jasper, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon in a Class 4A girls state semifinal at Birkelbach Field.
TYLER -- For the first 20 minutes of Saturday afternoon's regional championship game, it looked for all the world that Kilgore would have little resistance on its way to a berth at the UIL state soccer tournament.
The Bulldogs had a fight on their hands, despite grabbing an early two-goal lead and playing the majority of the second half with a man advantage.
It was a fight Kilgore ultimately won, 2-1, over Wilmer-Hutchins on a sun-splashed day at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium.
The following is a list of Saturday's regional final soccer results involving East Texas teams.
