TYLER -- A lot of people along Interstate 20 are eager to see how new Mavericks head coach Claude Mathis will shake up the Marshall-Longview rivalry when the two teams meet Sept. 8.

While that's the first official melee between the two schools in Mathis' tenure, the 7-on-7 squads met Saturday at Lindsey Park in Tyler for the right to advance to the Division I State 7-on-7 Tournament later this month. Longview kept its longtime edge with a 33-0 semifinal win in the Tyler State Qualifying Tournament and will make its first state tournament appearance since 2013.

Mark Martin
Mark Martin

TYLER -- Patrick Mahomes II jumped from passively watching the NFL Draft with the rest of football nation Thursday to being the center of the football world in just a matter of minutes.

It started when famed sports agent Leigh Steinberg, on Mahomes' left, received a message and began frantically signaling the number 10 on his hands to the Mahomes family. Thirty seconds later, the cell phone in Mahomes' hands started to buzz and flashed a Missouri number.

Four minutes after that, in Philadelphia at the site of the draft, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the Kansas City Chiefs had traded up to take the former Whitehouse High School and Texas Tech quarterback 10th overall.

LINDALE -- Even the best teams face a moment during their run that makes them question if they have the right stuff.

Lindale's moment came Tuesday in its first game of a two-game series with Whitehouse that will determine whether District 17-5A has an outright champion or co-champions. It pulled ahead in the first inning and slumped in the middle frames, but it ultimately run-ruled the Wildcats by a score of 12-2 through six innings.

Bryce Cundieff’s No-Hit Bid Helps Whitehouse Past Corsicana In Standings Race

Whitehouse starting pitcher Bryce Cundieff fires off a pitch.
Bryce Cundieff pitched 6 and 1/3 innings before allowing a hit in Tuesday's 5-3 Whitehouse win over Corsicana.

WHITEHOUSE -- It still would be easy for Whitehouse to lay an egg down the stretch and escape the backlash.

Most teams that return a roster full of players with state tournament experience are shouldered with their communities' expectations for a return trip. The Wildcats, on the other hand, have a nuclear trump card in their pocket should they stumble before reaching Round Rock for a second consecutive season.

Senior ace Ryan Walls was supposed to lead the 2017 squad back to the state's final four. He isn't available due to a preseason injury and probably won't throw in a game until next season as a Tyler Junior College Apache.

But this Whitehouse club just won't take the bait.
