Fast Start Fuels Liberty-Eylau’s 51-14 Rout of Pittsburg
TEXARKANA -- Liberty-Eylau scored 25 first-quarter points and built a 37-point halftime lead en route to a 51-14 victory against Pittsburg in District 13-3A action Friday night at Harris Field.
Liberty-Eylau (5-3, 3-0) got two touchdowns apiece from Baylor-bound Davion Hall, Donelle Hoofs, and D.Q. Steels, the trio that spearheaded the Leopards' offensive attack.
Hoof carried five times for 115 yards and scored on first-quarter touchdowns of 12 and 74 yards. Steels ran for 101 yards on nine carries, including a 39-yard first-quarter touchdown. Before that, he returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown to give L-E a two-score lead within the game's first four minutes.
Hall ran for a two-yard touchdown and caught a 60-yard touchdown pass from Javon Rigsby for 37-7 lead with 1:15 remaining in the first half. Liberty-Eylau stretched its lead to 44-7 with seven seconds left in the half when L.T. Hawkins returned a Pittsburg fumble 31 yards for a touchdown.
Hall caught two passes for 70 yards and ran three times for 18 yards. Rigsby completed 7 of 11 passes for 145 yards, while Malcolm Gant caught four passes for 54 yards, including a 16-yard fourth-quarter touchdown for the 37-point victory margin.
Liberty-Eylau held Pittsburg (3-5, 1-2) to 201 total yards. Carl Leonard led Pittsburg with 66 yards on 14 carries, while Teriyan Cuba ran seven times for 43 yards. Markeith Thompson caught a 25-yard first-half touchdown from Billy Kimble. John Warrick caught a 28-yard third-quarter touchdown pass from Garrett Truitt, who completed 7 of 19 passes for 36 yards.
