Tyler vs. Longview. Smith County vs. Gregg County. And on Friday night, Lions vs. Lobos.

One of East Texas' oldest and most storied rivalries is renewed this week when John Tyler faces Longview in a battle atop the District 11-6A standings.

The ETSN.fm + Dairy Queen Game of the Week kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Friday from Longview's Lobo Stadium.

John Tyler and Longview first met on the football field in 1912, and have faced off against one another almost every year since.

The Lobos carry a 46-36-7 all-time series lead, and have dominated in recent years, sporting an 11-2 record against John Tyler since 2001. However, the two teams have split the last four meetings.

Making this year's matchup even bigger is the success both teams have had in 2016.

Longview (6-1, 4-0) has won six consecutive games since a 35-24 season-opening loss to Lufkin, and is currently all alone in first place of 11-6A.

The only loss for John Tyler (6-1, 3-1) came in the district opener to Rockwall, which rallied from a 17-point, third-quarter deficit to stun the Lions, 59-58.

Be sure to check out the John Tyler-Longview game preview Wednesday morning on ETSN.fm, follow our own Clint Buckley (@ClintBuckley) for updates throughout the game, and head back to ETSN.fm late Friday night or early Saturday morning for complete game coverage.
