BROWNSBORO — Brownsboro quarterback Shelby Rogers’ three touchdown passes fueled the Bears as they defeated the Mineola Yellow Jackets, 40-21, in front of a homecoming crowd Friday night at Bear Stadium.

In addition to Rogers’ three touchdown passes, he racked up 112 yards rushing on seven carries, and added a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Bears’ victory.

With 22 seconds left in the third quarter, Brownsboro (5-2, 2-0) running back Johntae Walker found the end zone from 16 yards out after breaking three tackles. Walker’s touchdown was ultimately the dagger that put Mineola (3-4, 0-2) away.

On Mineola’s second drive of the game, Tyler Hudson looked to hit Casey Gilbreath to break into Bears territory, but Aaron Ramirez stepped in and intercepted the pass to set Brownsboro up on the Yellow Jackets’ 41-yard line. Walker then found a hole in the Mineola defense and punched it in from 15 yards out to give the Bears a 14-0 advantage.

Mineola answered midway through the second quarter when senior Dac Shaw battled his way through the Bears’ defensive line to put Mineola on the board and make the score 20-7.

The celebration would be short lived, however, as on the next series Rogers connected with Davonte Givens for an 18-yard touchdown.

Shaw moved the ball all the way to the Bears’ 23-yard line before a fumble, recovered by Brownsboro’s Darien Morse, which would set the stage for Rogers to find Ceasar Gutierrez in the end zone, giving the Bears a 33-7 advantage going into intermission.

With 3:23 left in the third quarter, Shaw switched to quarterback and connected with Harry Elhallaoui for a 28-yard touchdown to cut Brownsboro's lead to 33-14.

But, on the next drive, a 30-yard pass from Jared Bragdon to Walker brought the Bears within 16 yards of another touchdown. Walker then shook off two Yellow Jackets defenders to get into the end zone and increase the Brownsboro lead to 40-14.

Walker rushed for 116 yards on 10 carries and Bragdon threw four passes for 44 yards and two touchdowns in the Brownsboro victory.

Hudson rushed for 64 yards and collected 258 passing yards, including one touchdown, while Shaw carried the ball nine times for 23 yards and added a touchdown for Mineola.

Brownsboro travels to Van next Friday and Mineola plays host to Canton.
