Canton’s Samuel Miller Offered By Houston

Houston's emphasis on recruiting in East Texas continued Thursday when the Cougars offered Canton 2015 defensive end Samuel Miller, the Eagles' standout announced via Twitter.

Miller (6-3, 220) now has eight Division I FBS offers, while Houston extended an offer to its ninth East Texas recruit -- tied with Texas A&M and Texas Tech for the most of any FBS program.

Houston has also offered Longview running back and Baylor commit JaMycal Hasty, Kilgore running back and Cougars commit Kevrin Justice, Nacogdoches cornerback and Oklahoma State pledge Jaylon Lane, Lufkin receiver and Cougars commit Terry Mark, Lufkin offensive lineman Erik McCoy, Tatum linebacker/defensive back Kyshaun Smith, Longview offensive lineman Broderick Washington and Nacogdoches 2016 safety Brandon Jones.

In addition to the offer from Houston, Miller also has invitations from Memphis, Nevada, North Texas, Oregon State, Texas State, ULM and UTSA.

Houston is a member of the American Athletic Conference. The Cougars were 8-5 overall and 5-3 in league play a season ago.

Miller's combination of size, speed and strength off the edge makes him an attractive target for college programs. He also doubles as a tight end when Canton is on offense.

As a junior, Miller shined on the defensive side of the ball with 89 tackles, 26 of the tackles for loss, as well as four sacks and three forced fumbles. His play helped spur Canton to recover from an 0-4 start and reach the postseason.

Canton will compete in the new District 5-4A Division II this fall along with Bullard, Emory Rains, Gilmer, Melissa and Nevada Community.
