SULPHUR SPRINGS -- The Sulphur Springs Wildcats entered halftime of Friday night's season opener trailing Rockwall-Heath by five points. But they were shut out in the second half, suffering a 43-17 defeat at Gerald Prim Stadium.

The Hawks (1-0) got second-half scoring runs from Canaan Smith, Cory Wilkerson, and Tyler McCalister to spoil the season debut for Sulphur Springs (0-1).

Sulphur Springs took a 10-7 lead in the first quarter on junior Jaylon Hawkins' 56-yard touchdown run, but the Hawks took went up two scores on a 1-yard run by Smith and an 11-yard pass from Ben Mays to Kory Sparks for a 22-10 lead.

Hawkins' 7-yard touchdown run cut the Wildcats' halftime deficit to 22-17.

Hawkins led Sulphur Springs with 88 yards on 16 carries. Quarterback Tanner Ramirez passed for 166 yards, but was intercepted twice. Cain Cody finished with a team-high 11 receptions for 114 yards.

Sulphur Springs' season continues next Friday at Sherman.
