A year removed from an 8-3 season and Class 2A first-round playoff appearance, San Augustine is primed to make a statement as a new Class A program.

The Wolves have the vast majority of their starters back after a successful 2A campaign, so it only makes sense that they would be even better this year in 1A. The skill positions are loaded with quarterback Bobby Tanner, athlete Ty’Aundra Taylor and tailback Tony Hubbard, while linebackers Mikey Harrison and Rodrick Davis form the backbone of a veteran defense.

San Augustine will find out just how good it is during a three-week stretch at the end of the non-district schedule. The Wolves host Garrison, a 2011 1A Division I state semifinalist moving to 2A, and Hemphill (2A school) in consecutive weeks before traveling to Tenaha for a huge East Texas small-school showdown. San Augustine also must battle perennial power Alto on Nov. 2 at Wolf Stadium in what is expected to be the de facto District 10-A Division I championship game.

If the Wolves secure the top playoff seed, Mart is a likely third-round roadblock. Mart is No. 1 in Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine’s Division I poll, two spots ahead of San Augustine. But with the firepower and experience the Wolves return, they appear to be neck-and-neck with Mart as the Region III favorites entering 2012.
