Beckville Escapes With 3-2 Win in Game 1 Vs. Edgewood
TYLER — The Beckville Bearcats escaped with a thrilling 3-2 win over Edgewood in Game 1 of their Class 3A Region II semifinal playoff series Thursday night at Mike Carter Field.
Beckville (31-2) and Edgewood (34-7) resume the series with Game 2, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday back in Tyler.
Edgewood cut the Beckville deficit to a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Bearcats reliever Austin Bryan got Edgewood’s Cooper Hill to pop out to second base with the bases loaded to end the suspense.
Beckville starting pitcher Trey Lindsay retired the first two batters of the inning, but after a single from Keaton Seale, Bearcats head coach Jason Causey inserted Bryan as Lindsay reached the 110-pitch limit.
Trey Erwin was hit by a pitch and Turner Bannister reached on an infield single, loading the bases. Jayden Morgan then beat out another infield hit, allowing Seale to score.
Bryan fell behind Hill in the count, 3-1, before getting the game-ending popup.
Edgewood finished the night with 11 hits — all singles — and stranded 10 runners.
Lindsay allowed a run on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win.
Michael Mize went 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, and a walk to lead Beckville at the plate.
Beckville took a 2-1 lead in the fifth when Bannister, Edgewood’s starting pitcher, issued four consecutive walks. Ethan Harris’ bases-on-balls brought in the go-ahead run.
The Bearcats added a third run in the sixth on a Mize RBI double.
Edgewood scored the game’s first run when Morgan singled home Seale, who doubled with one out in the first inning.
Seale was 3-for-4 and scored twice, while Morgan had both RBI’s for Edgewood.
