What appear to be the two best Class 1A teams east of the Trinity River clash in an Oct. 5 pre-district contest that may serve as a measuring stick as they set their sights on postseason hardware.

Tenaha enters the 2012 season ranked No. 2 in Division II by Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine after the Tigers' 2011 state championship. San Augustine, which went 8-3 in Class 2A last season, is No. 3 in Division I and expects the drop in classification to yield a deeper playoff run than a year ago.

Replacing all-everything quarterback Reginald Davis, now at Texas Tech, won't be easy, but Tenaha has plenty of experienced players back, including 1,400-yard rusher Chavis Gregory and leading tackler DeAaron Roland. San Augustine counters with 1,300-yard passer Bobby Tanner and the multi-talented Ty'Aundra Taylor, who accounted for 12 touchdowns in 2011.

The game will be Tenaha's third road contest in four weeks, but San Augustine will be playing its third consecutive home game. Winning this game will send a message to the rest of Class 1A.
