NEWTON -- A week after Newton survived an upset bid from Class 3A Liberty, the Eagles got back to pounding a 3A opponent at home.

Texas-pledged tailback Kevin Shorter led a Newton ground game that amassed 376 yards as the No. 2 Eagles beat Orangefield 36-0.

Shorter ran 17 times for 158 yards and two touchdowns, while Brandon Johnson gained 124 yards and scored two touchdowns on only 10 carries.

Newton's Calum Foster added 71 yards and a touchdown on six carries.

Newton enters its bye week with a 3-0 record. All three wins have come against 3A opponents. The Eagles beat Bridge City 44-20 in their season opener before edging Liberty 22-17.

Shorter has 499 yards and six touchdowns on 39 carries. He's averaging 12.8 yards per carry.

Newton starts District 10-2A Division I play Sept. 27 at home against Warren.
