MABANK — The Athens Hornets bounced back from a tough loss last week with one of its best performances in recent memory.

The Hornets ran the ball for 501 yards as the Mabank Panthers could not figure out how to stop the powerful attack.

Athens (4-3, 1-1 in District 8-4A Division I play) finished with 568 yards of offense in a 70-7 thumping of the Mabank Panthers.

Coach Jared Wingfield's team dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in district play. The Panthers travel to Van Friday night.

The Hornets will return to Bruce Field to face the Kaufman Lions for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Athens dominated from the opening possession as Logan Fuller scored his first of three touchdowns with 5:55 remaining in the opening quarter. Mabank was able to block the PAT for the 6-0 deficit.

Fuller ran for 270 yards on 25 carries and was pulled early in the third quarter.

The Hornets continued the offensive attack as Grant Hirsch hauled in a 31-yard pass from Chad Head for a 14-0 lead with 2:45 remaining in the first quarter.

Athens rounded out the first quarter scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run from junior Travon Fuller. The PAT by David Cedillo gave the Hornets a 21-0 lead with 24 seconds remaining.

In the second quarter, the Hornets had touchdowns from Logan Fuller on a 7-yard run, a 14-yard touchdown by Devin Hall and a 4-yard touchdown by Hall for the 49-0 halftime lead.

Hall finished the game with 14 carries for 102 yards to become the Hornets' second leading rusher in school history.

In the second half, Travon Fuller had a 34-yard TD run, while David Palafox had a 1-yard scoring run. Cedillo had a 2-yard touchdown run for the 70-0 score with 6:05 remaining in the game.

With 1:01 left in regulation, Mabank's Christian Early had a 53-yard touchdown run. Dillon Poston booted the PAT.

Mabank finished with 205 yards of total offense as Early finished with 63 yards rushing. Clay Carson added 38 yards on 14 carries. Senior quarterback Cody Thompson was 8 of 21 passing for 61 yards with two interceptions.

Athens had 57 yards rushing from Travon Fuller on four carries, while senior quarterback Chad Head was 3 of 4 passing for 67 yards. Hirsch had two receptions for 46 yards and a touchdown.
