Martin’s Mill Clamps Down On Muenster + Advances To Boys State Tournament
McKINNEY -- Martin's Mill coach Trae Moore knew Saturday's regional final would come down to how well his team could defend Muenster's two large post players.
Consider it mission accomplished.
The second-ranked Mustangs held No. 3 Muenster's all-state duo of Lyndon Cook and Blayne Jones to a combined 10 points, and Martin's Mill advanced to the UIL boys state tournament in San Antonio with a dominating 46-28 victory in the Class 2A Region II final Saturday at McKinney North High School.
Martin's Mill (33-4) will play at either 8:30 or 10 a.m. Friday at the Alamodome in one state semifinal against either Canadian, Dallardsville Big Sandy or Schulenburg. The state championship game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. next Saturday.
Muenster (32-4), the defending Class A Division I state finalist, found the going difficult offensively all afternoon. The Hornets managed just three points in the second quarter and only two points in the fourth period.
Martin's Mill used a patient but efficient approach on its end the floor. Davis Moore and Logan Jenkins had the hot shooting touch from the outside, finishing with four and three 3-pointers, respectively.
Davis Moore had a game-high 21 points, while Jenkins finished with 12. The Mustangs' frontcourt combo of Hunter Conway and Dylan Weatherford teamed for the remaining 13 Martin's Mill points.
Coach Moore credited the defensive play of Weatherford and Jacob Greenlee for containing Muenster's powerful low-post attack.
Trevor Cheaney led Munester in defeat with eight points.
