Newton Erupts for 82 Points to Rout Grandview, Advance in 2A Playoffs
BULLARD -- Just when you thought Newton's offense couldn't be any more impressive, the Eagles made the entire state do a double-take Friday night.
D.J. Dean and Kevin Shorter combined for five touchdowns to lead Newton to an 82-35 win over Grandview on Friday night in a Class 2A Division I regional semifinal at Panther Stadium.
Newton's win set up a showdown between two of the state's best offenses in 2A -- the Eagles will face Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Dec. 7) at Lufkin's Abe Martin Stadium. Franklin defeated Tatum, 49-30, on Friday.
Dean scored on a 75-yard punt return and a 69-yard rushing touchdown for Newton (12-0), while Shorter scored three touchdowns.
The Eagles, who on Friday scored at least 63 points in a game for the sixth time this season, erupted for a 41-7 lead at halftime.
