SAN AUGUSTINE -- Class 3A Division II definitely will have a new state champion this season.

Newton bounced Waskom from the first round of the playoffs Friday in San Augustine in convincing fashion, a 66-0 win that was pretty much over at halftime.

The Eagles somewhat avenged a 2014 state championship game loss to the Wildcats, which was the first of two straight tiles won by head coach Whitney Keeling's squad. This season, without the primary stars of those title teams, the program struggled to a 4-6 regular season record and fourth-place seed in the state playoffs.

Newton (11-0) owned a 42-0 lead at halftime after building up a 20-0 lead through the game's first 12 minutes.

J.D. Spikes rushed for two touchdowns and added a third on one of three passing scores thrown by quarterback Brock Barbay.

Tamazia Brown had a multi-touchdown game for the Eagles as well, one rushing and one receiving.

Newton will travel to Lufkin's Abe Martin Stadium Nov. 18 for an area round game against Buffalo.
