There will be entirely new blood in the Class 3A Division I state championship game for the first time in a long time. Malakoff prevented Cameron Yoe from reaching a fifth consecutive title game and perhaps a fourth win in the span with a 37-34 overtime victory Friday at Waco ISD Stadium. Newton fell into real trouble for the first time all season in last week's Class 3A Division II, Region III semifinal playoff game against Elysian Fields. The Eagles had to dig out of an early 14-0 hole and, to do that, their defense needed to get off the mat and make more than a handful of stops against one of the region's most explosive offenses.

As expected, unbeaten Tenaha rolled over Meridian last week in its Class 2A Division II area around playoff contest. The Tigers got the game-winning score less than three minutes into the meeting and went on to score 10 more times in their 76-0 victory.
