After receiving his first Division I FBS offer from Purdue last week, Newton 2016 athlete Gabe Foster got offer No. 2, and this one comes from much closer to home.

ULM extended an invitation to Foster, the Newton standout confirmed via Twitter late Thursday morning.

Foster (6-3, 180), who has played both running back and defensive back in high school, became the 15th recruit in East Texas' 2016 class with multiple FBS offers. He's also the second regional prospect with a Warhawks offer, joining Frankston receiver Kendrick Rogers.

ULM has been no stranger to the East Texas area of late. It signed Canton's Chandler Eiland and Samuel Miller in February, a year after inking four area natives -- Chapel Hill's Wesley Thompson and Shaquille Warren, and Palestine's Ben Luckett and Brian Thlang.

The Warhawks, coached by Todd Berry, are members of the Sun Belt Conference. ULM is coming off a disappointing 2014 season, which included a 4-8 overall record and 3-5 mark in league play.

Foster helped Newton reach the Class 3A Division II state championship game with 91 carries for 586 yards and 14 touchdowns in addition to 66 tackles and an interception on the defensive side.

Newton has a few holes to fill after losing Texas A&M defensive back signee Roney Elam and a handful of other successful athletes, but the 2015 team will return a second player receiving college interest. Senior linebacker Tanner Holmes has invitations to join Central Arkansas and McNeese State after graduation.

Newton opens the season Aug. 28 at home against Tatum.

Foster, like all 2016 football prospects, will become eligible to sign with any program that offers him on Feb. 3.
