West Rusk’s Tyree Wilson Offered By Southern Miss

West Rusk junior linebacker Tyree Wilson is starting to pick up more steam with his recruitment.

On Thursday, he reported on Twitter that Southern Miss became the fifth Division I FBS program to offer him.

Wilson (6-5, 225) is currently committed to Washington State. He also holds invitations from Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe, and Texas State.

Wilson was a force on West Rusk’s Class 3A Division II bi-district team last season. He made 68 solo tackles, including 13 for loss, and assisted six other tackles in 11 games as part of a linebacking corps that cannibalized each other’s stats.

In addition to 74 total tackles, Wilson forced two fumbles and returned one interception 34 yards for a touchdown.

The Southern Miss program, located in Hattiesburg, Miss., simultaneously reached a bowl game for the second consecutive season under first-year coach Jay Hopson. It went 6-6 through the regular season and won the New Orleans Bowl while representing Conference USA against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Hopson seems to have an affinity for East Texas players. His staff also is interested in obtaining Tyler Lee quarterback Chance Amie, Pleasant Grove linebacker Xaiver Benson, Marshall guard Chasen Hines, Texas High receiver Tevailance Hunt, Arp safety DeMarvion Overshown and sophomore Pittsburg receiver Keaonte Burns.

Hopson joined Southern Miss after four seasons as head coach at Alcorn State. He won first place in the East Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference in both of his final two seasons.

Southern Miss boasts eight conference banners and has produced 78 All-Americans in its 104-year history of competitive football.

Wilson, like all college football prospects currently in their junior year of high school, will become eligible to sign with any program that offers him in February of 2018.
