HEATH – A five-run third inning proved to be too much for Beckville to overcome Thursday at Rockwall-Heath High School.

After falling behind by as many as five runs, Beckville rallied late and came up short. Whitesboro took a series lead in the best-of-three Class 3A Region II championship round with a 7-5 win.

The series resumes at 5 p.m. today in Heath. Game 3, should Beckville win Game 2, will follow in the evening hours.

Whitesboro led 6-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before Beckville plated four runs through the fifth and sixth innings. Whitesboro (27-9) added an insurance run in the top of the sixth.

Whitesboro’s Cayden Cobb picked up the win with a 5 and 2/3 innings outing, giving way to reliever Christian Godecke, who notched the save. Cobb did damage at the plate as well, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Brooks Barker led the way for Whitesboro with a 2-for-4, three-RBI night.

Trey Lindsay, Zach Collins, Ethan Harris and Ty Jones all finished with multi-hit games for Beckville (27-8). Lindsay finished with three singles while Collins, Harris and Ben Bridges all finished with RBIs.

Harris struck out seven in the loss, pitching into the fifth before hitting the UIL-mandated pitch count.

Four of Whitesboro’s seven runs were earned.
