What happens when a trendy school meets a trendy college football prospect?

We'll find out through time.

Houston became the 17th Division I school to offer the junior Nacogdoches cornerback, who won the ETSN.fm + APEC Football Recruiting Combine's Defensive Most Valuable Player award on Sunday. Thompson (6-0, 182) first announced the news Monday afternoon through his personal Twitter account.

At the combine event, Thompson's day was highlighted by running a 4.48-second, laser-timed 40-yard dash and recording a 36-inch vertical jump. He also scored a 124-inch broad jump, created a Keiser squat output of 3,447 watts and put up 15 reps of 185 pounds on the bench press.

The corner recorded nine pass breakups, intercepted a pass and recorded 33 tackles through Nacogdoches’ 10-game season last fall. He also caught 10 passes for 152 yards as a receiver.

Nacogodches finished its year in a three-team tie for the fourth and final spot out of District 16-5A with Lindale and Corsicana. Lindale advanced to the playoffs by nature of its head-to-head point differential against Nacogdoches and Corsicana.

Houston posted a 13-1 record last year and finished the year ranked eighth in the final Associated Press poll following a win against Florida State in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. It also won the American Athletic Conference's championship game.

A three-point loss to Connecticut in the Cougars' 11th game of the season potentially cost them a berth in the College Football Playoffs.

Head coach Tom Herman will be back for a second season in the Third Ward, and a former John Tyler quarterback Greg Ward Jr. will lead the on-field charge this year.

Ward, as a junior, threw for 2,828 yards and 17 touchdowns to six interceptions while also leading the American Athletic Conference champions with 1,301 rushing yards and 21 ground scores.

Thompson is the seventh local junior to be targeted by the Cougars. The list includes a trio of current John Tyler players in quarterback Bryson Smith, defensive back Javontavius Mosley and receiver Damion Miller.

Thompson, like all high school football prospects currently in their junior year, will become eligible to sign with any school that offers him in February.
