Plano West Ends Lufkin’s Season In Crushing Fashion, 55-52
WACO — In a game that will long be remembered for its offensive fireworks, the final outcome was decided on special teams.
Luis Garcia missed a 29-yard field goal attempt as time expired, sending the Plano West Wolves to a wild 55-52 win over Lufkin on Saturday in a Class 5A Division II Region II semifinal at Waco ISD Stadium.
The missed kick came moments after Plano West (9-4) scored the eventual game-winning touchdown on a Sotonye Jamabo 1-yard run with 1:12 remaining. That came after Lufkin (9-4) scored 28 consecutive points to erase a 24-point, third-quarter deficit.
Plano West advances to a regional-final matchup with Austin Westlake (9-4), which knocked off Longview, 38-10, on Saturday.
Lufkin senior quarterback Tyler Stubblefield passed for 457 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions, and ran for 58 yards and two TDs. JaBryce Taylor, an SMU commit, concluded his high-school career with nine catches for 237 yards and three touchdowns.
Plano West was led by its rushing tandem of Jamaba and Auston Anderson. Jamaba ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns, while Anderson added 145 yards and two TDs of his own. Quarterback Travis Korry passed for 250 yards and ran for two touchdowns.
The Wolves went up 48-24 with 9:28 remaining in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by Korry, which was set up by Plano West’s third interception of Stubblefield.
It look the Lufkin quarterback and Taylor just three plays to get it back when they hooked up for a 47-yard touchdown. After Lufkin’s defense stopped Plano West on back-to-back possessions, Stubblefield hit Coutee for a 35-yard score to cut the deficit to 48-38 with 29 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
Lufkin got within three points, 48-45, on its next drive after Stubblefield’s 10-yard scoring run with 6:53 remaining. After another stop by Lufkin’s defense and a 6-yard Plano West punt, the Panthers were back in business at the Wolves’ 23.
Kendrick Mapp gave Lufkin its first lead four plays later on a 4-yard run with 3:28 to go.
Plano West began its march.
A 19-yard pass from Korry to Connor Doyle and a 32-yard run by Jamabo set Plano West up with a first-and-goal at the 4 on the ensuing drive. Gamabo scored three plays later to give the lead back to Plano West.
Lufkin wasn’t done. On the first play of the Panthers’ drive, Stubblefield connected with Jamal Jeffery for 42 yards to the Plano West 16 with 48 seconds remaining. Two Mapp rushes for a combined 4 yards and a Stubblefield incompletion set the stage of Garcia’s game-tying attempt.
The Lufkin defense tightened up in the second half, holding Plano West to 123 yards after giving up 461 in the first half, falling behind 41-24 at halftime.
