Steven Crump’s One-Hit Shutout Lifts Harleton Past Cayuga in One-Game Playoff
LINDALE — Steven Crump held Cayuga to only one hit and Harleton scored four two-out runs in the third inning to top Cayuga 4-0 on Thursday in their Class A Region III quarterfinal one-game playoff at the Lindale ISD Baseball Complex.
Harleton advanced to the regional semifinals where it will take on the winner of Saturday's one-gamer between Douglass and Lovelady at Lufkin's Morris Frank Park.
Crump struck out 10 and allowed only three Cayuga runners into scoring position in the win, while also adding an RBI single in the game's defining inning.
In the third inning, Cayuga pitcher Chantz Holland put Cody Fregia on after hitting him with one out and Brooks Lloyd followed that with a single. After a fly out, Crump reached on an infield single, which glanced off a diving Hunter Johnson to allow Fregia to score the game's first run.
Lloyd then came in to score on a single from Jack Underwood, and both Underwood and Crump scored on a deep double by Matt Burke.
That was more than enough cushion for Crump, who gave up only a second-inning bloop hit to Hunter Jenkins.
Holland was strong in the loss, striking out five and allowing only six hits, four of which came in the third.
